Members of the Basic High football team pose for a photo at the Las Vegas Sun’s high school football media day Tuesday July 31, 2018 at the Red Rock Resort and Casino. They include, from left, Dorian Mcallister, Boots Render, Franco Mays, Enrique Canizales, Julio Duron and Carlos Rojas.

Franco Mays bookended Basic’s 42-35 victory over Las Vegas High Friday night with highlight plays.

To start the game, Mays returned the opening kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown. Then, with a minute left, he came down with a 40-yard, game-winning touchdown heave from Paul Myro.

But the Wolves couldn’t rest easy after Mays’ receiving touchdown.

The Wildcats drove right down the field, reaching the Wolves’ 30-yard line with five seconds remaining on the game clock. Las Vegas was able to throw a Hail Mary that had a real chance at completion, but Basic batted down the pass in the end zone.

The Wolves never trailed in the game, but they could also never pull away from the Wildcats. Their struggles had a lot to do with an unintended three-week break after a fight during its last game, on Aug. 31 against Clark.

“(Las Vegas) did a good job with pace, and having not played in three weeks, we weren’t in shape for a game,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said.
