Police: Man sleeping in vacant lot on south Strip run over by dump truck

A man who was sleeping between a mound of desert dirt and a large mesquite bush in a vacant lot south of the Strip died when a dump truck drove over him, according to Metro Police.

A crew doing work on a billboard on Las Vegas Boulevard South near Russell Road contacted police about 10 a.m. to report the incident, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

A GMC dump truck and another vehicle were heading north on the lot, which is known to be frequented by street people, when the truck encountered the sleeping man, police said.

A coworker of the second vehicle told the motorist what had happened, and the crew returned to the scene, police said.

Officials were unable to identify the victim, who died at the scene, because he lacked identification, police said.
