A pedestrian suffered fatal injuries this morning when she was hit by an SUV in the central valley, according to Metro Police.
The pedestrian, who died at University Medical Center, became the 12th fatality on Metro-patrolled roads this year, police said.
The crash was reported about 7 a.m. on northbound Decatur Boulevard at Alta Drive, police said.
Lt. Nick Farese said the pedestrian was in a crosswalk but was crossing against a do-not-walk signal.
“Our driver did a very good job at trying to avoid the pedestrian,” but overcorrected, running onto a sidewalk and hitting the pedestrian, police said. The vehicle ended up on top of a number of large landscaping rocks, police said.
“These are all preventable if we follow the rules and do what we’re supposed to do as drivers and pedestrians,” Farese said.
The crash remained under investigation.
