LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Gun sales need not be difficult

A simple plan for background checks:

• Sales at gun shows: There will be an office on site for a police agency. All sales of guns will be delivered to the agency with a photo ID of the buyer and with the background check application completed with copy of receipt of purchase. The buyer will retrieve the purchase from the agency once the check is completed and found acceptable. The check will be paid for by the buyer. If declined, the seller can retrieve the item from the agency and the buyer can get his refund from the seller.

• Personal sale: The seller delivers the gun to a police agency with a copy of photo ID and completed background check application. The buyer will be notified when the check is approved or denied. If denied, the seller will be contacted to retrieve his gun and the buyer will retrieve his refund from the seller.

• Retail sale: The item will be retained at the retail store; the background check and buyer’s photo ID will be submitted to a police agency. The store and buyer will be notified when the check is completed.
