LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Governments are major threats

E. J. Dionne’s column “The new nationalism” in the Dec. 31 edition makes some interesting points on nationalism, globalism and populism. However, I object to some of the specific claims made by John Judis, the writer referenced in the middle of the column.

Judis is wrong to worry more about undue corporate influence than about excessive government control. After all, what killed more people and caused more destruction in the 20th century, corporations or powerful central governments interested in regulating and controlling? Also, evidence shows that “internationalism,” more or less supported by Judis, never seems to stop when it reaches the level of lost sovereignty originally promised. Just look at the history of the European Common Market and the European Union.
