Utah’s new senator, Mitt Romney, breezed into Washington, D.C., with a blistering op-ed about President Donald Trump’s lack of honesty, integrity and empathy. Romney indicated that he supports Republican policies, but that he will speak out against egregious transgressions of the national interest.
The president sets the tone for the general mood of the nation. Trump has sewn divisiveness and discord with his attacks on the media and his ad hominem attacks on his critics.
Republicans have cozied up to Trumpism in order to maintain power. They have corrupted the ethics of the party saying that the ends justify the means. But the means matter. I hope Romney will stand for traditional conservative values.
I believe Romney wants to be on the right side of history.
