Billionaire investor and activist Tom Steyer announced last week in Iowa that he would not seek the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. He held a town hall in Las Vegas on Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, to discuss his efforts to impeach President Donald Trump.

Divisiveness in the U.S. political climate at its highest since the American Civil War, according to a California hedge fund manager, and impeaching President Donald Trump is the only way to restore the rule of law.

“I am 100 percent committed to the impeachment and removal of this president,” said Tom Steyer, whose nationwide Need to Impeach Tour made its stop Monday night in Las Vegas. “Trump is the most corrupt president in American history.”

Speaking to a crowd of 70 people at the Nevada State Education Association headquarters in the central valley, Steyer accused the president, who has two years left on a four-year term before the 2020 election, of being a “criminal” who serves as a puppet for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Steyer said merely waiting until the next election, as he says Democratic politicians have advised him to, would be “unacceptable.”

“This must start today,” Steyer said. “Keeping (Trump) isn’t free.”

Steyer, whose impeachment ads have flooded American TV and computer screens after reported expenditures of over $20 million of his own money so far this year, said he’ll be taking all this year to tour the country in hopes of ousting the Republican president. Steyer said he’s not seeking a Democratic Party nomination for the 2020 presidential election.

While Steyer admitted he doesn’t agree with any of the political policies endorsed by Vice President Mike Pence, the California businessman said having the former Indiana governor in charge of the country would “restore the rule of law.”

“We’ll never get there unless we get this corrupt criminal out of the White House,” he said.

Renae Eze, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, said Steyer has "an unhealthy fixation on impeaching our president."

"Unfortunately for him, his plans to roll back America’s progress are clearly out of step with Nevadans,” she said.

Monday’s event was the fourth on a nationwide tour that has included stops in Charleston, South Carolina; Fresno, Calif., and Ankeny, Iowa. Steyer said he has spoken at more than 40 town halls since 2017 to advocate for the president’s removal.
