Metro Police investigate a shooting in the 1500 block of Del Monte Avenue, where more than 20 bullets were fired, killing a man, Thursday Jan. 17, 2019.

Houses and vehicles were hit when more than 20 bullets were fired in a central valley neighborhood during a Thursday night shootout, according to Metro Police.

And when a man involved in a street fight that prompted guns to be drawn in the first place passed by again, he was gunned down, police said.

By late Thursday, Metro detectives had a man in custody. Gilberto Barrientos, 28, was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a count of murder, police said.

Hours earlier, officers swarmed the crime scene in the 1500 block of Del Monte Avenue, near Decatur and Oakey boulevards, and found a man lying in the street with a gunshot wound, Lt. Ray Spencer said.

The wound proved to be fatal and the victim, whose name has not been released, died at University Medical Center, Spencer said.

A more thorough investigation determined the victim and another man had passed through the neighborhood when an argument broke out about 5:50 p.m. with a group of people, police said.

Guns were drawn and a shootout ensued, police said. Houses and vehicles were hit, but no one was injured in the initial gunfire, police said.

Soon thereafter, the victim passed by again and was allegedly confronted by Barrientos, who shot him, police said.

Spencer said the victim and the alleged shooter “knew each other or had some prior relationship.” Police did not say how Barrientos was identified or what prompted the shooting.

No other arrests have been announced.
