Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman revealed today she has breast cancer, at the same time she announced she would run for a third and final term in office.
Goodman said she was diagnosed with Stage 2A cancer in her right breast, but her medical team told her it was “completely contained, manageable and can successfully be treated.” Goodman, 79, said she had four upcoming treatments scheduled.
“Otherwise, I am completely healthy and can continue to work effectively as the mayor of Las Vegas during treatment,” she said.
Stage 2 means the cancer is growing but is contained to the breast or nearby lymph nodes, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The difference between 2A and 2B, which is more advanced, is determined by the size of the tumor and whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, according to the foundation.
Goodman said her cancer was discovered during an annual physical.
“Believe me, I have more energy than a pack of wolves and look forward to serving the wonderful community and people of Las Vegas for four more exciting years if, in fact, they choose to re-elect me," Goodman said during the announcement at City Hall.
Goodman was first elected mayor in 2011, succeeding her husband, former Mayor Oscar Goodman, who served the maximum three terms in office. If re-elected, Carolyn Goodman's term would run through 2023, when she, too, would be subject to term limits.
Filing for municipal elections starts today and runs through Feb. 1. The primary election is April 2, and the general election is June 11.
