Everyone knows there’s a lot more than just Chinese food available in the Las Vegas Chinatown District, the western stretch of Spring Mountain Road running from the Strip to Rainbow Boulevard. Now there’s another unique street-food snack worth sampling.

MyungRang Hot Dog opened recently at the new Shanghai Plaza center at Spring Mountain and Arville Street, serving hot dogs on sticks in the popular Korean street-food style. The restaurant company originated in Korea and expanded to the United States last year, including a wildly popular location at the California Market Center in Los Angeles.

MyungRang’s deep-fried dogs look something like a typical carnival corndog but have a taste and texture all their own. Beef franks are skewered and dipped in a light rice flour batter, leading to an extreme crunch in every bite and a more neutral flavor meant to be enhanced by an assortment of condiments and dipping sauces. MyungRang rolls the finished product in sugar for a sweet-and-savory contrast, but you can skip that step. Among the many sauces available are yellow mustard, hot sauce, cheddar cheese sauce, ketchup, honey butter, honey mustard and cheese mustard.

The most popular bite is the mozzarella and sausage hot dog ($2.99), which layers melty, stretchy cheese into with the hot dog. More adventurous eaters can try the squid ink hot dog ($3.99), which incorporates black squid ink into the batter for a seriously Instagrammable creation also filled with cheese, or the popular potato hot dog ($4.49), which gets wrapped in crispy potato cubes. It’s like having a side of fries with your dog incorporated into every bite.

MyungRang Hot Dog is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 4284 Spring Mountain Road #101, at the western end of Shanghai Plaza. It’s one of many restaurants and tea shops operating at the new retail center, which also contains the second location of longtime local favorite Weera Thai and the first Vegas location of Kura Revolving Sushi Bar.

Also open are Dagu Rice Noodle, Tea Maison, Sharetea bubble tea shop, Minnesota transplant Orchid Vietnamese Restaurant, Yummy Rice and Noodle Papa. Set to open soon are Tokyo’s popular Pepper Lunch, 85°C Bakery Café and Shanghai Taste, the latter a sister restaurant to chef Jimmy Li’s Niu Gu a few blocks away on Jones Boulevard.
