Carnegie Deli looking for new home in Las Vegas

Carnegie Deli

Corned beef bliss awaits at the Mirage. Carnegie sandwiches are still the most popular order, most of them loaded with more than a pound of meat.

The Carnegie Deli is set to disappear from the Mirage, but it may not be leaving Las Vegas.

In an announcement last week, an MGM representative said the New York-style deli is set to close its doors at the Strip resort for good early next year.

But Sarri Harper Weissman, vice president of Carnegie Deli Products Inc. and a third-generation operator of the brand, said the company is “actively looking for a new home in Las Vegas.”

“We hope to bring Carnegie Deli to the Strip, and we look forward to continued growth and expansion in 2020,” she said.

Harper Weissman left the door open for the Carnegie company to collaborate with MGM again. “MGM has been a great partner to Carnegie Deli over the years. We’d be happy to partner with MGM again," she said.

Tailored after the original Carnegie Deli that opened in 1937 in New York City, the Las Vegas location at the Mirage will close in February, MGM spokeswoman Ashley Farkas said.

The deli, which opened at the Mirage in 2004, is famous for its sky-high corned beef and pastrami sandwiches and its cheesecake.

MGM made the decision to part ways with Carnegie and plans to introduce a new restaurant concept next year at the Mirage space, Farkas said.

“We continually evaluate offerings, customer demand, etc., to ensure we are meeting market needs and providing the best possible customer experience,” Farkas said. “Understanding that the grab-and-go option was what our customer was looking for, we decided to take the opportunity to refresh the space with a fast-casual restaurant that met that need.”

The original Carnegie Deli in midtown Manhattan was named after the nearby Carnegie Hall. Harper Weissman’s grandfather, Milton Parker, took over operation of the restaurant in 1976 from its original owners.

The company maintains a deli in New York at Madison Square Garden. It also ships its products nationwide, Harper Weissman said.
