LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Trump backers put to the test

During his 2016 campaign, Donald Trump said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his supporters would let him get away with it.

Holding back $400 million in military aid to Ukraine for his own political gain, to help him win re-election in 2020, is a betrayal of his oath of office and of the American people. When this betrayal was reported to William Barr’s Department of (In)-Justice, Barr declined to investigate it as a crime because he said Trump was seeking nothing of value from Ukraine.

Extorting Ukraine to help him win the 2020 election was more damaging to America, and to the future of democracy around the world, than if Trump had actually gunned down someone on Fifth Avenue.

We are about to find out if his supporters in the House of Representatives and the Senate are going to let him get away with this crime against democracy and against the American people, just as Trump predicted. Or, will they finally stand up for our Constitution and for the future of democracy, and defend the American people against this act of betrayal?
