LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t leave dogs out in the cold

Cold weather is around the corner, and no pet in extreme weather should be left outside overnight. Even those who think it is OK to leave dogs outside 24/7 should consider letting them in at night, even if it’s just by throwing an old rug or towel by the door to give them a chance to be warm. Dogs with short hair, such as pointers, beagles, pit bulls, Rottweilers and dobermans, are particularly susceptible to the elements.

Likewise, it should be against the law to leave dogs outside when the temperature is above 90 degrees. Many dogs die but go unnoticed and are replaced with another to languish in the heat. Please notify animal control if you are aware of a dog living outside in the extreme heat or cold.

Dogs that live outside should have a doghouse to shelter them from the wind, sun or cold. Your pets have been loyal to you, loved you unconditionally and are always happy for any attention you give them. They deserve to be in at night when it is cold. Isn’t that the least you can do for “man’s best friend”?
