3 likely dead in small-plane crash north of Las Vegas

Updated Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019 | 8:19 p.m.

Three people onboard a small aircraft that went down in a fiery crash in a mountainous region north of Las Vegas were believed to be dead, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and Metro Police.

The Cirrus SR22, a single-engine plane, crashed about 5:30 p.m. near Gass Peak and caught fire, said the FAA's Ian Gregor.

Initial reports suggest the crash happened at the top of the mountain, said Metro Lt. Brian Boxler, noting that the agency had sent out a helicopter, but that it was determined that the crash was "not survivable."

There would be no immediate rescue efforts and the investigation would begin Wednesday, Boxler said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board would be probing the crash, Gregor said.

Details on injuries or rescue efforts were not immediately available.

Preliminary information was subject to change, Gregor said.
