OPINION:

New recycling method needed

In my neighborhood, on bulk trash pickup day, I see many cardboard boxes of all sizes at the curb. Most of these boxes were used for deliveries from online orders placed at Amazon, Walmart, etc.

The boxes don’t fit in the recycle cart, so they are picked up by the bulk trash truck and I assume go straight to the landfill. Republic Services says to flatten the boxes and place them in the recycle cart but that is not an easy operation, especially for seniors — not to mention the space required in the cart when added to the resident’s other recyclables.

This was not a problem before single-stream recycling started. With online shopping increasing in popularity and the resulting additional packaging required, this problem will only be exacerbated. I think a significant amount of clean, recyclable, cardboard is being wasted with the existing pickup methods.
