Letter to the editor:

GOP values gone by the wayside

In the March 30 letter “Trump is best economic choice,” the writer said of Greta Thunberg and her ideas that she was young and a bit of an idealist for siding with most scientists who claim that unless we take drastic measures within the next 20 years, we will suffer catastrophic environment consequences.

The writer also states that President Donald Trump should be re-elected because of a “huge economic engine, which purrs when all engines are firing.” And why not? Having gutted numerous environment regulations for the benefit of big business and profit, Trump was projected to add $4.83 trillion to the national debt in his first term, a 24% increase over President Barack Obama’s budget for 2017. And that doesn’t include the preliminary debt incurred for the coronavirus pandemic.

Let’s also not forget that Trump’s 2017 tax cut, which primarily benefited the rich, added $1.5 trillion to the national debt. Why wouldn’t “Trump’s economy” purr and the S&P soar when environmental regulations are gutted for profit and tax breaks are given to the rich and wealthy?

What happened to Republican fiscal responsibility and the mantra to avoid large deficits for the next generation?

Yes, Thunberg is an idealist, but she’s also a realist whose ideas are backed by most scientists. I’ll stand with her and Obama any day for, as Obama said of idealism, “Let us reach for the world that ought to be.”
