The South Point plans to furlough most of its workforce next month as a result of the statewide casino shutdown ordered because of the coronavirus, the resort announced today.

“As a result of the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resort closure mandate by Gov. (Steve) Sisolak, we have had to make a very difficult decision to furlough most of our employees for an indefinite period beginning May 3, 2020,” according to a statement.

Employee health benefits would be maintained through July 31, officials said.

Once the property opens again, workers will be brought back “based on demand,” the statement said.

In mid-March, Sisolak ordered all casinos and other nonessential businesses closed for 30 days and later extended the shutdown through April 30.

Located in the southwest valley, the South Point has more than 2,100 hotel rooms, about a dozen restaurants and an equestrian center.
