Nearly 370,000 Nevadans have filed for unemployment benefits so far this year, according to a report today from the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

The state’s unemployment rate is now 17%, the highest in Nevada history, according to the department.

Just under 39,500 people filed first-time employment claims during the week that ended April 18, a 33% decrease from the previous week’s numbers, according to the report.

The yearly total of claims is already at an all-time high, as the state struggles with the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the closure of casinos and other nonessential businesses statewide for over a month because of the virus.
