Metro Police say two 17-year-old girls were hit by this vehicle and killed in a crosswalk at Maryland Parkway and Katie Avenue on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020.

A woman suspected of driving impaired hit and killed two teens in a marked crosswalk Monday night, according to Metro Police.

The driver, Ebone Whitaker, 38, suffered serious injuries, police said. She faces two counts of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving, according to court logs.

The crash, which Metro described as “horrific and 100% preventable,” happened about 7 p.m. on Maryland Parkway at Katie Avenue.

Whitaker’s Mercedes-Benz SUV was speeding south on Maryland Parkway when it veered onto a sidewalk and hit a traffic sign before striking two 17-year-old girls in the crosswalk, police said.

There have been 57 traffic-related fatalities in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.
