CCSD: At least 100 staff have tested positive for COVID-19

At least 100 adults employed by the Clark County School District have tested positive for COVID-19 at some point since the pandemic broke out in mid-March, officials said.

They didn’t indicate when the positive tests occurred or if the employees have recovered to produce negative tests. And they didn’t indicate how data was gathered on positive tests, meaning there could very well have been more cases that are unknown, especially considering there have been nearly 57,000 positive tests statewide.

At least one employee — a food service worker — died from complications of the virus in the spring.

In the case of a positive test impacting a CCSD facility, the district will “initiate a disinfectant cleaning protocol’’ for the facility in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, officials said.

Teachers aren’t required to be tested to return to work, as learning will be conducted remotely starting Aug. 24 and some won’t be on campus. But teachers only account for half of the district’s 40,000 employee work force.

The district decided against opening physical buildings to students because of the threat of coronavirus, but teachers were given the option to work from their physical classroom if they preferred.

CCSD works with the Southern Nevada Health District in contact tracing to provide the names of individuals who may have been in close contact with an employee who has tested positive.

CCSD can’t provide the name or any identifying information about an employee’s health, including a positive COVID-19 test, under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). CCSD employees have been reminded that posting information about employees’ health on social media would be a violation of HIPAA, according to CCSD’s communications office.
