School District awaits waivers to serve free meals to all students

The Clark County School District is hoping to get federal waivers so it can serve free meals to all students this school year.

The district plans to provide breakfast and lunch for all students weekdays at more than 300 distribution sites when classes resume remotely Aug. 24.

The district decided against opening schools because of the threat of the coronavirus pandemic.

If the waivers are not granted, the program will be limited to those who qualify for free or reduced-price meals, about 67 percent of students.

“One of the most important things students receive in addition to education at schools is also meals,” district spokesman Mauricio Marin said. “When students have food in their stomachs they’re able to better focus on learning.”

Distribution locations and menus will be available online at ccsd.nutrislice.com.

If the district's plan is approved, meals will include a bagged-to-go breakfast with an entree, fruit, juice and milk, and a bagged lunch with a hot entree, vegetable, fruit, milk and juice.

Meal pickup for elementary school students will be 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Middle school pickup will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and high school pickup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The district is still discussing how to get meals to students who don’t have transportation to distribution sites.
