Man killed in Las Vegas house party shooting

A man was shot and killed overnight during a house party hosted at a short-term rental in northwest Las Vegas, according to Metro Police.

This was the third such slaying in under a month.

Gunshots rang out about 12:20 a.m. in the 8800 block of Hickam Avenue, near El Capitan Way and Craig Road.

Officers didn’t encounter any injuries at the house, but shortly after the shooting, a man was dropped off at Centennial Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Lt. Ray Spencer said.

He was then transferred to University Medical Center, where he died from a gunshot wound, Spencer said.

Spencer only described the victim as being in his late 20s. A suspect description and motive weren’t revealed. No arrests have been announced.

Detectives were interviewing more than 30 party attendees earlier today, Spencer said.

The recent killing follows a fatal stabbing at a pool party in the south valley on July 22 and a fatal shooting Aug. 1 in an east valley house during another party.

Both those incidents occurred at houses that had been leased illegally, since short term-rentals are banned in unincorporated Clark County.

But this morning’s slaying occurred in the city limits of Las Vegas, which allows such rentals, though it wasn’t clear if the renter had the necessary permits.

Either way, large gatherings have been banned in Nevada to curtail the spread of COVID-19. Spencer said large house parties should be reported to police to prevent another tragedy.

Metro said earlier this month that there’d been at least 15 shootings in recent months at such gatherings. Airbnb, a rental service, said Friday that it had banned 20 Clark County homeowners for breaking their no-party policies.
