A 1-ounce gold coin believed to have a value of $1,800-$2,000 was dropped into a Las Vegas Salvation Army kettle.

An anonymous donor recently slipped a valuable 1-ounce gold coin into a Las Vegas Salvation Army kettle.

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin was dropped into one of the iconic red kettles in the past three days, the Salvation Army of Southern Nevada said Tuesday. The coin is believed to have a value of $1,800-$2,000.

“We’ve witnessed extraordinary acts of kindness and giving during this challenging year, and this incredible donation is certainly no exception,” said Capt. Anthony Barnes, Salvation Army Clark County Coordinator, in a statement. “We wish to thank this generous donor from the bottom of our hearts.”

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a gold bullion coin that is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Its face value is $50 Canadian — about $39 U.S. — but the market value of the metal itself, though variable day to day, is far greater.

Despite this golden gift, Barnes said the Salvation Army of Southern Nevada is only 74% of its way to its $584,000 fundraising goal.

Donors can drop their change at any traditional storefront red kettle or via more modern methods: online at www.salvationarmyredkettle.org; by texting RedKettles to 51555; asking Alexa to “Make a donation to The Salvation Army;” or by scanning NFC tags and QR codes on red kettle signs with your cell phone to make a contactless donation.
