A man accused of sexually assaulting a victim in a Strip resort Sunday was tracked down and placed in handcuffs less than 24 hours later with the help of facial-recognition technology, according to Metro Police.

Donavan Fox, 27, who was arrested the day of the attack reported at the Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on one count each of sexual assault, burglary and open and gross lewdness, jail logs show.

Police did not release further details Thursday when they identified Fox, but Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo mentioned the case in his State of the Department speech to Metro’s top brass Wednesday.

Lombardo said the suspect was “able to enter the victim’s room” before the sexual assault. Metro-operated cameras captured Fox on the Strip.

At some point, Fox’s face must’ve matched a database of booking photos in Metro’s incarceration records, the only images Lombardo said the agency uses to cross-reference with facial-recognition technology.

When there is a match, Metro detectives use it to develop reasonable suspicion to further investigate. That suspicion isn’t enough to make an arrest, since detectives must still obtain probable cause through other investigative methods, Lombardo said.
