Police: No sexual assault related to fire at Strip resort

Metro Police say there was no sexual assault related to a fire at a Strip resort earlier this week and they are investigating the blaze as an arson.

Police initially reported that a sexual assault victim was discovered Wednesday in a hotel room where firefighters extinguished a burning mattress. A woman was pulled form the room and taken to a hospital, police said.

“After two days of extensive investigation by LVMPD which utilized many resources, it was determined there was no sexual assault related to this event and there is no ongoing threat to the public,” Metro said in a statement released today.

Police said the investigation was active and they would not release any additional details today.

“The investigation is now being treated as an arson,” and the Clark County Fire Department is assisting with that aspect of the investigation, the statement said.

Firefighters responded about 11 a.m. Wednesday to the Excalibur, where the blaze was reported on the sixth floor, the Clark County Fire Department said. They found a sprinkler had been activated in a room where a mattress was on fire, officials said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and no evacuations were necessary, officials said.
