Governor names 2 members to Cannabis Compliance Board

Gov. Steve Sisolak has named the first members of the state Cannabis Compliance Board, a governmental body that Sisolak made a priority during the 2019 legislative session.

Former Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander and former Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Douglas will serve on the board, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Douglas was also named chairman.

“I have the utmost confidence that these principled public servants will provide invaluable guidance and steady hands as the Cannabis Compliance Board transitions to a fully authorized enforcement body on July 1,” Sisolak said in a statement.

The board, which will ultimately have five members, will be modeled after the Nevada Gaming Control Board and take over regulation of the marijuana industry from the state Department of Taxation.

Tyler Klimas, who worked as press secretary for former Gov. Brian Sandoval, was named executive director of the board in September.

Riana Durrett, the executive director of the Nevada Dispensary Association, said Neilander and Douglas are knowledgeable and talented.

The board must be filled by July 1.
