LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Most on SNAP are truly needy

A close relative of mine is a single mother with a 13-year-old who is autistic. He receives in-home therapy after school for four hours a day, three times a week.

Because his mother is required to be present during the sessions, she cannot hold a full-time job. She works at a low-paying, labor-intensive job that allows her the ability to do this, and drives a 15-year-old car.

While she does receive some child support, the father is frequently behind.

She had been receiving food stamps, but when her benefits were reduced to $15 a month, it was no longer worth the hoops they made her jump through to get that pathetic amount.

Readers need to understand that in most states, people must be working to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits — and if their jobs don’t pay enough, well, tough, says the government.

I’d like to remind readers that unless you personally know someone who is driving a late-model Mercedes and ripping off the system, don’t assume that everyone is.
