A pedestrian on a south Las Vegas sidewalk was fatally injured late this morning when he was struck by a compact SUV, according to Metro Police.

The victim, only described as a 53-year-old Yakima, Wash., resident, died at University Medical Center.

The crash occurred at 11:24 a.m. on Gilespie Street, south of Sunset Road, police said.

Police said the man was walking on a sidewalk, east of the roadway, when a 2016 Kia Sportage crossed into oncoming traffic and veered off the road.

The vehicle, driven by a 38-year-old Las Vegas woman, ended up on the landscape, police said. The motorist was not impaired and stayed at the scene.

Police did not say why her vehicle left the roadway. The crash remained under investigation.

This was the fifth traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2020, 16 days into the year.
