Police: 2 girls, 13, arrested after threatening schoolmates

Hours before classes started Monday at Lois and Jerry Tarkanian Middle School, two 13-year-old girls took to Instagram and threatened the lives of three schoolmates, Clark County School District Police allege.

The three would-be victims were mentioned by name, police said.

The girls accused of making the threats, both eighth-graders, were arrested about 2 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Bryan Zink said. They were facing counts of making terroristic threats and causing a disturbance at school, he said.

It was not clear if the threats were credible.

The girls’ names were not released because of their age.

After the posts appeared on Instagram, they began spreading online among students and parents, prompting at least 18 reports to the School District’s SafeVoice tip line, Zink said.

Metro Police soon got involved, and patrols were increased at the school at 5800 W. Pyle Ave., Zink said. Some parents kept their children home, he said.
