LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Is a mask debate so important?

It is tumultuously loud across our social media platforms, cable news networks, posts with Facebook “friends” and even in local supermarkets. The need to convince an audience while referencing half-baked statements borrowed from the current day’s talking points from one’s preferred news channel is ubiquitous across our society.

With all the yelling, no one is listening. We are becoming increasingly divided through hysterical hype, satirical sound bites, noisy news and ineffectual expert analysis.

However, we have far more in common in this great but wobbling country than we have in differences. There is concern, though, that we have lost a bedrock American value of respect for one another.

We have a nation shedding millions of jobs with hundreds of thousands of families suffering while industries collapse — not to mention the racial and civil strife eclipsing a 6-month-old pandemic still on fire across portions of our most populous communities.

Yet through all of this, we want to argue about wearing a mask in public. Come on, America, we are better than this — or we certainly used to be.
