LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Racism will be unmasked

Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, Les Moonves, Bill Cosby — they are just a few of the poster boys of the #MeToo movement. The sexual harassment and abuse they allegedly perpetrated gave birth to a revolution that put the dirty little secret of sexual misconduct and abuse of power on Main Street.

Because of their actions, some of these men were charged and went to prison. Others lost their livelihoods so that women could regain their dignity. When women stood in solidarity and said enough is enough, America listened.

Now, there is a new movement, and the cause is focused on canceling racism. Just as the audacity of white male privilege led powerful men to think they could harass and attack women and get away with it, there are still too many people who think their white privilege gives them license to denigrate black and brown folks on a daily basis.

It doesn’t matter if we are wildly successful or laboring in obscurity, the wickedness of racism can be found everywhere. America’s hard-line approach to sexism forced some men into better behavior. Could that tough approach help us eradicate racism? In the words of Whoopi Goldberg: “All you racists out there, we know you. If you are in the walls, we are tearing the building down. You are coming out.”
