The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will start reopening from the coronavirus shutdown June 15, with social distancing measures in place.

For the first 30 days, people with only the most pressing needs will be seen in person, DMV officials said. Services will include restoring suspended driver’s licenses, providing an ID for those with no valid form of identification and issuing license plates for new cars

Transactions such upgrading an ID card into a REAL ID card or purchasing a personalized license plate will not be allowed in the first 30 days.

"Nevadans have done incredible work to help flatten the curve of COVID-19 and we must continue to take precautions to minimize further spread as we work toward a new normal,” Gov. Steve Sisolak said in a statement. “The DMV provides a number of services completely online and Nevadans who can should continue to access services that way."

People should visit the DMV’s website before heading to an office, officials said. Transactions such as renewing vehicle registration can be done online.

Those who must visit a DMV office should have any necessary documents filled out in advance, officials said.

DMV offices have been closed since March 18, after Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the closure of all nonessential businesses to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

As a precaution, DMV clients may be asked to wait in their cars and offices may stop accepting new customers in the afternoon, depending on demand, according to a news release.

A “mobile ticket” will allows people to scan a QR code or enter a web address to check in and see their place in line while waiting elsewhere.

Staff will wear face coverings and customers are also encouraged use face covering. Office capacity will be capped at 50%.

Rural offices will only allow ten customers inside at a time, and will only serve customers from the immediate area.

There is an extension on driver’s licenses and other DMV-issued documents that expired starting March 16.

Documents with expiration dates from March 16 to June 14 are valid through Sept. 13. Documents with expiration dates between June 15 and July 14 must be renewed by Aug. 14.
