Vegas police: 2 teen brothers on dirt bike killed in crash

Updated Saturday, June 13, 2020 | 1:53 p.m.

Two teenage brothers riding a dirt motorcycle through a Summerlin neighborhood died in a crash with an SUV Friday night in what Metro Police is describing as a "very sad situation."

Police said the victims, ages 14 and 18, were speeding north on Pavilion Center Drive on a Honda bike when they smashed into the passenger door of a Land Rover, which was turning into a residential neighborhood.

The crash was reported about 8:45 p.m. on the intersection with Regal Mesa Avenue, said police, noting that the 18-year-old was operating the bike.

Metro Lt. Bret Ficklin said the bike, built for off-road riding, wasn’t street legal or safe for neighborhood roads. Only one of the victims was wearing a helmet, which didn’t help due to the severity of the crash.

The motorcycle didn’t have any lights, said Ficklin, noting that speeding was confirmed by a witness who had heard a bike’s loud revving before the impact. The posted speed at the intersection is 30 mph.

“It’s just a very sad situation,” he said, adding that it was “easily avoidable.”

Ficklin said police were having issues across the valley with riders operating dirt bikes on roads, saying money motorcyclists are younger and with no license. He reminded parents that the bikes aren’t toys, and that they should keep a watch on their children.

Additionally, those types of bikes should be pushed or transported into the desert and not driven there, Ficklin said.

“There’s no reason why that motorcycle should have been ridden on a street,” he said.
