A special session of the Nevada Legislature is planned for early July, after Gov. Steve Sisolak approved a request to delay the start, state lawmakers said.
The governor previously said the session would be conducted some time before July.
Lawmakers will have to tackle massive budget holes caused by revenue declines as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. A shortfall of $1.3 billion is expected in fiscal 2021, which begins in July.
In a news release, legislative leaders said they requested the extension because Legislative Counsel Bureau staff needed more time to develop virus safety protocols.
The session will be conducted in person in Carson City.
Lawmakers said the bureau must ensure, per the governor’s reopening directive, that no space within the Legislative Building holds more than 50 people. Staff also needs more time to prepare “sufficient physical safety measures,” the release said.
Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, D-Las Vegas, and Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, D-Las Vegas, said they appreciated the governor’s flexibility.
