Motorist is killed in shootout with NHP trooper after traffic stop

A suspect who opened fire on a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper in Elko Friday night died when the officer shot back, officials said Saturday.

The incident began as a traffic stop about 10:20 p.m. in the small town in Northern Nevada, officials said.

The motorist, a 30-year-old local, was suspected of impaired driving. Before a field sobriety test could be conducted, the man took off running, officials said.

During the pursuit, he drew a gun and shot at the trooper multiple times, missing, officials said. The trooper returned fire and killed him.

The trooper was placed on routine paid administrative leave while the investigation was ongoing, said officials, who announced a more thorough media briefing for Tuesday.
