With the coronavirus spreading in Southern Nevada, Wynn Resorts says it plans to use special thermal cameras to screen guests for fever at the entrances of its Las Vegas properties.

“In the coming days, we will begin temperature screening all guests and employees,” a company statement said. “Any person registering a temperature of 100.4F or higher will be discreetly informed by a trained member of the security team and not be permitted to remain inside the resort.”

Health officials have identified 17 cases of coronavirus in Clark County, including at least one case at a Las Vegas Strip resort. Another three cases have been reported in Northern Nevada, but there have been no related deaths in the state.

The thermal cameras at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore were not in place as of late Friday morning but were expected to be up and running soon, a company spokesman said. They won’t specifically detect coronavirus but will be able to detect a fever, a telltale sign of the virus.

Wynn also announced this week that it was canceling all large gatherings and closing buffets at its Las Vegas properties beginning this weekend.

“Every scientific and health authority I’ve spoken to has focused on the need for social distancing,” Wynn CEO Matt Maddox said in a statement. “This isn’t simply a good idea, it’s essential. Not forever, but certainly for now.”

Maddox said full-time employees working at affected nightclubs and dayclubs, theaters and buffet operations will continue to be paid.
