Catholic schools in Vegas to keep students home early next week

Monday and Tuesday are training days for teachers in the event of schools closing over coronavirus concerns

The eight Catholic schools managed by the Diocese of Las Vegas, including Bishop Gorman High School, have designated Monday and Tuesday as training days for teachers in the event of schools closing over coronavirus concerns, officials announced today.

The teacher in-service days, in which students stay home, will allow staff “two full days of training and planning to ensure continuity of instruction during any required closing,” Catherine Thompson, superintendent of Catholic Schools Diocese of Las Vegas, wrote in a letter to parents.

Classes are expected to resume Wednesday, but Thompson said school leadership is meeting daily to evaluate the fluid situation of the virus that’s continually caused mass disruption in the valley. An update was expected by noon Tuesday.

“We will remain vigilant about taking appropriate actions and precautions to safeguard the health and welfare of our students,” Thompson wrote. “All members of our school communities will to continue the best practices of hygiene and handwashing as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, (and) the Southern Nevada Health District.”

The Clark County School District hadn’t canceled classes as of Saturday, but had suspended non-essential activities.
