Hours after Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered all Nevada schools to close due to the spread of coronavirus, the Clark County School District announced locations where free breakfast and lunch will be provided for students during the closure.
Food distribution centers have been set up at 28 schools across Southern Nevada and will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily starting Monday, the district said in a statement.
Academic resources for students will also be available at these sites. Those obtaining food must have school-aged children present with them, the district said.
CCSD is working with local and state government along with community partners to establish additional food distribution options, which will be shared with parents “as soon as it is available,” the district said.
All public, private and charter schools in Nevada close starting Monday, and will stay closed until April 6 at a minimum. Sisolak said schools will not reopen until the state chief medical officer evaluates the situation and gives permission.
As of Sunday, 22 other states including Washington, Maryland and Virginia, along with public school districts such as New York City and Los Angeles, had closed schools as well. Las Vegas had 16 reported cases of coronavirus as of Friday, although the number could be much higher given that testing for the novel virus has been limited.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that gatherings of 50 people or more be cancelled across the country for at least next eight weeks to control the spread of the virus. As of now, most bars and restaurants remain open in Las Vegas, although major sporting events, concerts and shows have been cancelled, and Wynn Las Vegas and MGM Resorts have closed down their properties.
