MGM Resorts International today announced it is beefing up a program to provide financial assistance to workers impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.

Through an emergency grant fund, MGM will make $1 million available for employees to help pay their bills after Gov. Steve Sisolak on March 17 ordered all casinos and other nonessential businesses closed for 30 days.

The assistance granted will be based on thresholds set by the MGM Resorts Foundation, said Jyoti Chopra, MGM senior vice president and chief diversity officer.

Payments will be made directly to service providers for costs associated with mortgages or rent, utilities and medical bills.

“We know that this is an extremely challenging and uncertain time for many of our employees, their families, friends and neighbors and we are committed to help those in need,” acting MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle said in a statement.

Those eligible for the emergency assistance include all full-time and on-call employees, along with those facing a job separation through layoff or furlough, according to the company.

“In battling the current global crisis, at MGM Resorts we intend to embrace humanity, exemplify inclusion and exhibit compassion,” Chopra said in a statement. “Our commitment to our employees and the communities in which we operate, conduct business and serve our customers, remains steadfast.”
