Madison Square Garden Co. says it is suspending construction on its MSG Sphere project on the Strip because of the coronavirus outbreak, acknowledging the entertainment venue will not open on time.

“The widespread global effects of COVID-19 have resulted in significant impediments to construction that are beyond the company’s control, including disruptions to its supply chain,” MSG said in a statement.

All work at the 18-acre construction site is expected to come to a stop over the course of the next two weeks, official said. As a result, construction of the 17,500-seat arena will not be finished in 2021 as originally planned, officials said.

The site, adjacent to the Venetian, is on Sands Avenue between Manhattan Street and Koval Lane. AECOM, the general contractor for T-Mobile Arena, is the lead firm building the MSG Sphere.
