A 94-year-old man in Metro Police custody died Tuesday following a monthslong hospitalization, officials said Tuesday.

The inmate, who was jailed Jan. 2 on counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, discharging a firearm within a structure, burglary and conceal carrying the firearm without a permit, died at University Medical Center from undisclosed reasons, police said.

He was taken there on Jan. 16 for treatment, although Metro didn't specify for what. “The decedent did not have any police interaction prior to the medical episode."

According to reports and Metro booking logs, the only elderly suspect to be booked at the Clark County Detention Center on Jan. 2 under the identical counts Metro listed Tuesday was Robert Thomas, 93 years old at the time.

Thomas was accused of walking into an apartment complex office Jan. 2, holding employees at gunpoint and shooting one of them in both legs.

Metro Police officers responded to 911 calls at 4051 Viking Road, saw Thomas standing over the victim, and one of the officers opened fire, missing, but startling the suspect, who instantly dropped his gun.

Thomas was injured when he was forcefully put in custody but was later released from UMC. Thomas, a resident of the complex, was in the office to complain about flooding in his unit, officials said at the time.

Upon last status check, Thomas was undergoing psychological evaluations, according to Clark County District Court logs. A competency hearing had been scheduled for Friday.
