A former Sierra Vista High School teacher arrested last year for inappropriate contact with students has been ordered to register as a sex offender, according to Clark County District Court records.

The order was part of his sentencing handed down Monday as part of a February plea agreement.

In exchange for pleading guilty to one count of child abuse, neglect or endangerment, Jonathan Patrick Cronin, also received a 36- to 96-month suspended jail sentence and was prohibited from contacting children.

Cronin was arrested on April 11, 2019, on five counts each of sex act between a school employee and a student and open and gross lewdness of a child, and two counts of child abuse.

The arrest of the then 29-year-old teacher came about two weeks after Clark County School District police began investigating him.

According to allegations that went back a couple of years, Cronin was accused of illicit touching, lewd behavior and vulgar comments, police said at the time.

In testimonies, students described Cronin’s class as being in disarray. Cronin, they said, would regularly walk around shirtless, and made sexually charged comments to the female students, police said. With the boys, police said, Cronin was accused of touching them in their groin area.
