Mesquite Police: Man kills son who threatened mom with knife

A man fatally shot his adult son who had reportedly threatened to kill his mother with a knife, according to Mesquite Police.

Police said the shooting, which happened about 1 a.m. Monday at a residence, appeared to be justified.

Officers found the wounded man on the floor unconscious and breathing, police said. He was taken to Mesa View Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The Clark County Coroner's office will release his name.

According to police, the son had started an argument with his mother while holding a knife. She told him if he didn’t stop, she was going to call 911, police said.

He then pulled the woman off a chair to take the phone from her and made threats to his mother and father, police said.

The son was “holding the knife in an aggressive manner directly over top his mother, who feared for her life,” police said in a statement.

“The father also believed the male was about to stab his mother so he was forced to shoot him to save her life,” the statement said.

Police did not release the names of the father or mother.

The investigation was ongoing, police said today.
