The Nevada Highway Patrol said 25 cars were damaged by rocks thrown from an overpass on U.S. 95 in April. Five juveniles were arrested in connection with the incidents, the patrol said.

Five juveniles were jailed on felony counts after throwing rocks into moving traffic on U.S. 95, leaving a couple dozen vehicles with dents and broken glass, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Two people were hit in the rock-throwing incidents, but nobody was seriously injured, the patrol said.

The suspects, who are 10 to 14 years old, were arrested Monday and booked at Clark County Juvenile Detention Center, where all but one remained today. Their names were not released because of their ages.

A total of 25 cars were struck in three separate rock-throwing incidents, two on April 24 and one on April 30, the patrol said. In each case, the rocks were tossed off the Torrey Pines Drive overpass, the patrol said.

Witnesses at a nearby apartment complex reported seeing children climbing fences near the freeway, the patrol said. By May 8, detectives had identified and interviewed five juveniles and after an investigation, found enough probable cause to arrest them, the patrol said.

The suspects each face counts including battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm and injury to property, the patrol said.

The parents could be held financially responsible for the damages, Trooper Jason Buratczuk said in a news release.

“With the current situation around the country with schools and after-school activities closed, parents need to know where and what their children are doing,” Buratczuk said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic.
