Virus testing site at Texas Station beset by technical troubles

Technical issues hampered proceedings at a COVID-19 test site at a Texas Station parking garage on Monday, according to a news release.

Those who attempted to register on-site were turned away because of the technical difficulties, although about 250 people did get tested Monday, according to a Clark County spokeswoman.

Under normal circumstances, patients who hadn’t pre-registered would have been able to get tested. It was unknown Monday afternoon how many people were turned away from the site, which was scheduled to shut down at 4 p.m.

The North Las Vegas site was launched last week due to “a surge in COVID-19 cases in Southern Nevada and increased demand for testing,” according to a news release issued by the county last week.

State health officials Monday reported 1,914 new COVID-19 cases, along with eight deaths. The total number of confirmed cases in Nevada since the start of the pandemic climbed to nearly 123,000.

More than 1,900 have died from the virus this year in Nevada, which now has a 14-day test positivity rate of 15.4%. That’s well above the optimal goal of 5% set by the World Health Organization.

The Texas Station site is scheduled to run Thursdays through Mondays, although it remained unclear late Monday afternoon when the technical issues would be cleared up.

Several Southern Nevada testing sites are scheduled to be available Tuesday, including the Cashman Center and UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center.
