Nearly 1,400 Clark County School District employees could lose their jobs if the district does not return to in-person instruction following months of pandemic-forced closures.

Positions in facilities management, transportation and school police are among those being considered to be cut because those jobs involve the physical presence of students and staff, reported Jason Goudie, CCSD’s chief financial officer, in a Thursday presentation to the district's School Board.

School has been conducted remotely since the outset of the pandemic in mid-March. A proposal to bring students back in January for partial in-person learning never reached a vote by the board last week because of a surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the Las Vegas area.

“While the impact of these potential reductions is considered, the district will continue to balance its commitment to fiscal responsibility, operational efficiency and quality instruction,” a CCSD announcement reads.

In the transportation department alone, the district could save approximately $12.5 million by the reduction of up to 650 staffers. The custodial staff would be trimmed by 50%, or 700 workers, for a savings of $13.5 million.

CCSD Police would prioritize vacancies, buyouts, and seek part-time opportunities to reduce the number of impacted officers, officials said. The district recommended a reduction of about 30 police positions to save around $1.5 million.

The district is evaluating all positions and will make recommendations for cuts where necessary.

The School Board requested the report, and Superintendent Jesus Jara has not made any recommendations to cut positions, the district noted.

There’s currently no scheduled vote on the recommendations.
