Las Vegas hires new city manager

Longtime city of Las Vegas staffer Jorge Cervantes will be the next city manager after the city council unanimously approved a $250,000 per year contract today.

Cervantes will take over Nov. 15 and replace the retiring Scott Adams, who spent three years as city manager as part of a 16-year career with the city.

Cervantes will transition from his role as the city’s chief operations and development officer, where he managed the departments of operation and maintenance, parks and recreation, economic and urban development, public works, planning, and building and safety, according to the city.

Cervantes will be tasked will helping navigate the city through a financial crisis caused by the pandemic. The budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 was cut by $124 million because of the pandemic.

Cervantes from 2008-14 was the director of Public Works. He started in 1998 with the city as a project engineer and has also served as the assistant city traffic engineer, city engineer and Public Works deputy director. He was one of the first in Nevada to be registered as a professional traffic operations engineer, according to the city.
