Intentional strike by van passenger kills woman on bike in east LV

A minivan passenger harassing pedestrians Sunday morning in east Las Vegas killed a bicyclist and subsequently fell out of the vehicle to also kill himself, according to Metro Police.

Hours after the crash, investigators continued to search for the driver of the minivan, who fled the scene, said Lt. Ray Spencer. He described the driver as a young Hispanic male.

The crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. on Hollywood Boulevard, near Sahara Avenue, Spencer said.

A group of motorists were driving recklessly south on Hollywood, when the minivan broke away and veered toward the sidewalk where a couple was walking, Spencer said.

The passenger stuck out half his body in a failed attempt to slap the pedestrians, Spencer said.

But the pranksters continued on the road and encounter a woman in a bike lane near Sahara, Spencer said. The man again pulled out his body, slapping the woman, who fell to the ground, receiving fatal injuries, Spencer said. She was 55.

The momentum caused the man to fall out of the minivan, hitting the asphalt for about 150 feet before he hit a traffic light, which instantly killed him, Spencer said.

Detectives were combing the remote area for video cameras that might have recorded the incident or the minivan, which driver is facing homicide-related charges, Spencer said.

“Senseless is an understatement,” Spencer said. “It’s an absolute senseless act, there’s no reason behind this why I could tell you why it occurred other than complete stupidity.”
