Police: Woman fatally shot after barging into apartment

A man fatally shot his girlfriend’s former partner this morning in an apparent act of self-defense, according to Metro Police.

The woman suffered a single gunshot wound and died at University Medical Center, Lt. Ray Spencer said.

Officers responded about 4 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 5200 block of Charleston Boulevard, near Nellis Boulevard, Spencer said.

The former partner showed up at an apartment unannounced to gather some of her belongings and began loudly knocking and banging on the door, Spencer said.

The man grabbed a gun, went to the door and asked who was there multiple times, Spencer said.

No one answered, so he cracked the door open, Spencer said. That’s when the woman shoved her way inside, prompting the man to open fire, Spencer said.

When the man recognized the woman, he began to render aid, Spencer said.

The man’s girlfriend and three young children were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, Spencer said.

It’s typical for possible self-defense cases to be forwarded to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine if any charges are warranted.
