Fire destroys vacant building near Las Vegas Strip

Fire destroyed a vacant building today just northeast of the Las Vegas Strip, city fire department officials said.

The fire was reported about 6:20 a.m. today at a two-story, concrete block building in the 2100 block of Paradise Road, about a block east of the Stratosphere, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building, which might have been structurally compromised by a previous fire in May, officials said. Firefighters did not enter the building because of the danger of collapse, and shortly after they arrived, sections of the roof caved in, officials said.

Because the fire had to be fought from the outside, it took longer than normal to knock down the bulk of the flames, officials said. Firefighters were expected to remain on the scene the most of the day to put out the blaze completely, officials said.

Traffic on Paradise Road may be restricted today from East St. Louis Avenue to East Sahara Avenue, officials said.

Firefighters from Las Vegas and Clark County responded to the blaze.
